Mel's Take 5 December

Your Publisher’s Guide to all things #NaturalinNOLA

  1. local shops and companies to buy a gift for the active person in your life.

  1. tasc Performance—athletic wear for men and women. Tasc just opened its gorgeous new flagship location on Magazine earlier this year. New Orleanian father and son team Al and Todd Andrews spent years developing a proprietary bamboo fiber fabric that feels and preforms unlike any other athletic wear out there. It is all natural, made without any chemical additives, sustainably-sourced, and made in their family owned facility in India, which they personally oversee. With annual revenues already in the 8-figures and their line in over 700 retailers nationwide in a just a few short years, expect this to be one of the great start-up stories to come out of NOLA this century—Shark Tank need not apply! They also host a running club every other Tuesday and great fitness pop-up such as yoga on Sunday mornings (free ice coffee and mimosas following the class, which you have obviously earned!).

  1. Varsity Sports—athletic wear and footwear for men, women, and “future runners.” Locally owned and operated, Jenni Peters opened the first location in 2000 with investments from 20 locals to turn a little corner house in Baton Rouge into a running store. They now have locations in Baton Rouge, the Northshore, Metairie, and they just opened a new store in Old Metairie. As they say “run hard, live easy.” Host of several running clubs as well.

  1. Louisiana Running + Walking Co—athletic wear and footwear for men and women. Home of New Orleans’ only video gait analysis, they can show you how your feet land and the type of footwear necessary for your stride at any of their 3 locations in Metairie, Uptown, and Midcity. They also host local running and walking clubs.

  1. Massey’s Professional Outfitters—outdoor wear and gear. Family owned and operated since 1972, Massey’s is the only place in southern Louisiana to find surf and snow gear you can actually see, touch, and try before you buy for that next vacay. They also have a killer selection of camping gear, bikes, kayaks, athletic wear, footwear, accessories, and basically anything you may need for your next outdoor adventure. As you may have seen driving by, their awesome flagship store on Carrollton Ave. in Midcity often has a sales tent outside with killer deals. Locations in New Orleans, Metairie, the Northshore, and Baton Rouge.

  1. New Orleans Yoga Apparel—yoga wear for men, women, and children. Created by New Orleanian and local yoga teacher, Mariesa Barbara, to promote an active lifestyle and what makes NOLA unique. Seriously, the baby yoga pants with the snowballs all over them make me want to melt! Wear your local flava, y’all!
